The world of high society and tabloid headlines bids farewell to Chief (Mrs.) Adebisi Khadijah Abike Edionseri, famously known as ‘Cash Madam’, who passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 6, 2025, at the age of 89—just months shy of her 90th birthday in April.

For over six decades, Edionseri was a dominant force in Nigeria’s social and business landscape. A wealthy businesswoman and flamboyant socialite, she was a permanent fixture at elite gatherings, captivating all with her elegance, opulence, and signature generosity.

Born on April 8, 1935, in Ibara, Abeokuta, Ogun State, to Pa Sanusi and Madam Sabintu Elegbede, Edionseri embraced entrepreneurship at an early age, launching her business with an initial capital of £25, a gift from her father. Chief (Mrs.) Adebisi Khadijah Abike Edionseri charisma and sharp business acumen transformed that modest sum into a multi-million naira empire. By the late 1970s, she was already a self-made multimillionaire, a rarity for women of her era.

Chief (Mrs.) Adebisi Khadijah Abike Edionseri remarkable rise to affluence earned her admiration across Nigeria. The legendary Ebenezer Obey immortalized her in his 1972 hit album, “Board Members,” while Sakara maestro Yusuf Olatunji had, even earlier, hailed her as ‘Abike Cash Woman’ in the 1960s.

A Life of Glamour and Generosity

Edionseri was the epitome of class, style, and generosity. She graced countless elite gatherings, her presence elevating any event. Even at 89, she remained an active socialite, attending parties in exquisite outfits, adorned with diamonds and luxury perfumes. She was last seen in public at Chief Fassy Yusuf’s 70th birthday in Ijebu-Ode on January 3, just days before her passing.

Despite her flamboyant lifestyle, she was deeply philanthropic. She financed hospital projects, educational programs, and religious initiatives. Through her scholarship schemes, she supported underprivileged children from primary school to postgraduate studies—both in Nigeria and abroad.

A Musician’s Guardian Angel

Chief (Mrs.) Adebisi Khadijah Abike Edionseri’s benevolence extended to the entertainment industry, particularly Sakara legend Yusuf Olatunji. In a heartfelt tribute in his 1973 album, Olatunji recalled how she paid for his medical treatment at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), preventing him from amputation.

Final Moments and Burial

Edionseri’s son, Otunba Abayomi Odunowo, confirmed her peaceful passing, recalling how the family had joyfully spent the holidays together before her unexpected demise. Her remains were laid to rest on January 6 at 4 PM, according to Islamic rites, within her palatial mansion in GRA, Abeokuta.

At her well-attended funeral, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun expressed shock and sadness, revealing that he had seen her just days before, full of life and excitement about her upcoming 90th birthday—an event she, sadly, would not live to see.

A Legacy that Lives On
