Former Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, is alive and well, despite a wave of false reports on social media claiming he had died.
His former Commissioner for Information, C. Don Adinuba, addressed the rumours on Friday, dismissing them as completely untrue and intended to mislead the public.
Adinuba explained that he personally contacted Obiano to verify the situation and confirmed that the ex-governor is “hale and hearty” and currently living in the United States—not the United Kingdom, as suggested by an online publication. “Obiano has never lived in the United Kingdom. He lives in the United States of America. I just spoke with him now,” he said.
He urged Nigerians to ignore the circulating claims, noting that such baseless speculations could cause needless anxiety for Obiano’s family, close associates, and the people of Anambra State.

Obiano, who governed Anambra from 2014 to 2022 after succeeding Peter Obi, was born on August 8, 1955, and hails from Aguleri in Anambra East Local Government Area.
In a formal statement titled “Former Governor Willie Obiano is Alive, Healthy, and Kicking,” Adinuba further clarified the situation, stressing that the rumour of Obiano’s death in London had no factual foundation.
According to him, “This rumour has no basis. Chief Obiano lives in Texas, United States, and not in London.” He added that the former governor remains “healthy, strong, and remarkably agile for someone who has just turned 70.”
Adinuba expressed appreciation for the widespread concern shown globally, including interest from major international outlets. He said the support demonstrates how highly Obiano is regarded even years after leaving office. The statement also drew a comparison to past instances where prominent figures, like the Great Zik of Africa, were subjects of false death reports, noting that Obiano now finds himself in similar company.
The statement was signed by C. Don Adinuba, Former Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment.
