Popular Nigerian singer Ahmed Ololade, better known as Asake, has found himself at the centre of controversy after a video of his alleged estranged father, Fatai Odunsi, surfaced online. Odunsi, who claimed to be the singer’s father, accused him of abandonment despite his failing health.
Father’s Allegations Spark Reactions
In the viral video, Odunsi stated that he had not seen Asake since 2022, the same year he reportedly suffered a stroke. He alleged that repeated attempts to contact his son had been ignored, leaving him struggling financially.
“Since I had a stroke, I haven’t seen him. The last time I saw him was March 29, 2022. He doesn’t pick up my calls when I call him. Please, I only need your help,” Odunsi said in Yoruba.
The video quickly gained traction, leading to widespread debates on social media about family responsibility, fame, and loyalty.
A Glimpse into Asake’s Roots
Born and raised in the culturally rich area of Isale Eko, Lagos, Asake’s early life was deeply intertwined with the vibrant streets of Lagos Island. According to longtime residents, the singer grew up in a two-storey building in Ori Omo Road, where his father, popularly known as ‘Malo,’ was a well-known figure.
Speaking to Sunday PUNCH, an elderly woman identified as Mrs. Farida confirmed that Asake’s father was actively involved in his upbringing, despite reportedly separating from the singer’s mother when Asake was four years old.
“Asake was a quiet child. His father raised him well, though he was strict. It is surprising to hear that Asake has abandoned him now,” she said.
Neighbours and Family Weigh In
While some neighbours defended Asake’s father, others suggested that there might be more to the story. A relative identified as Alabi stated, “No matter what Malo could have done to Asake, there’s simply no justification to abandon his father like that.”
Similarly, a former colleague of Odunsi, Adetola Oso, insisted that he was a responsible father. “Malo took care of Ahmed (Asake). He never lacked in his responsibility as a father to him,” she said.
Asake Responds Through Music
Following the backlash, Asake subtly addressed the controversy through a song posted on social media. Singing in Yoruba, he appeared to suggest that external pressures were trying to bring him down.
“You can’t please the world. Whatever you do, do it for God and always remember the day you’ll die and meet your God. Even my father wants to cajole me, but I stand firm and they can’t off my light,” he sang.
The lyrics have been interpreted as a defiant stance against those criticising him over the allegations.
The Lexus Car and House Rent Claims
Further fueling the debate, a video shared on X (formerly Twitter) showed Odunsi celebrating the gift of a Lexus car, allegedly from Asake. However, reports indicate that the car was later sold due to maintenance costs. A family friend also claimed that Odunsi was struggling to pay his rent and had reached out to Asake’s mother for help.
A WhatsApp message allegedly sent by Odunsi read: “Help me to talk to Hammed. I won’t be able to pay my house rent. I don’t have money, please help me talk to him.”
Public Reactions
The controversy has divided opinions online. While some sympathise with Odunsi, others believe there may be underlying reasons for Asake’s alleged distance.
One user wrote: “No matter what, family is family. Asake should not ignore his father.” Another countered: “People should not judge without knowing the full story. There’s always another side.”
As the debate rages on, Asake has yet to directly address the allegations, leaving many speculating about the true nature of his relationship with his father.
