An investigation has been launched into the death of a contractor at Egbin Power Plc following an industrial accident during underwater maintenance operations at its facility in Lagos State.

The company confirmed the incident to The PUNCH on Thursday, noting that the accident occurred on Tuesday, April 28, 2026.

According to reports, the contractor—who was engaged as a diver for underwater maintenance work at the plant’s lagoon-based pump house—died after a sudden operational mishap.

Sources said a pump allegedly activated unexpectedly while the diver was working underwater, trapping him in the system’s impeller, leading to his death.

Following the incident, operations in the affected section were immediately suspended, with safety protocols activated. The development later resulted in a partial shutdown of the plant and its temporary disconnection from the national grid.

Checks indicated that the plant recorded zero megawatts output on Wednesday and Thursday as security and regulatory agencies continued investigations.

Egbin Power, Nigeria’s largest electricity generation plant with an installed capacity of 1,320MW, confirmed the tragedy in a statement, expressing deep sorrow over the loss.

The company said emergency response procedures were activated immediately and relevant authorities were notified.

“The board and management of Egbin Power express deep sorrow and extend heartfelt condolences to the family, loved ones, and colleagues of the deceased,” the statement read.

It added that the firm is cooperating with law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders while a full review of the incident is ongoing.

Egbin Power also reaffirmed its commitment to strict health and safety standards across its operations for both staff and contractors.

The shutdown has reportedly contributed to power disruptions in some areas, while investigations into the cause of the accident continue.
