A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, Matthew Uwuigbe, has died in a hotel room following an alleged sexual encounter with a 21-year-old commercial sex worker.

The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of the state.

The spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the incident, saying Uwuigbe died shortly after checking into the hotel with the woman.

According to the police, the lecturer had engaged the services of Angela Defa Jacob before the incident occurred.

“On October 5, 2026, at about 8 pm, the command received a report that Matthew Uwuigbe, a lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, had lodged at a hotel in Ekpoma and engaged the services of a 21-year-old sex worker, Angela Defa Jacob,” Ikoedem said.

“He subsequently sent the woman to purchase water for him, and upon her return, she found him lying dead in the room.”

The police spokesperson said the hotel owner, manager and Jacob had been arrested in connection with the incident.

She added that the three suspects were being detained at the state police headquarters as investigations continued.

Uwuigbe’s remains have since been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary.

Meanwhile, the university confirmed that Uwuigbe was a member of its academic staff but stressed that the incident did not occur on campus.

Mike Aladenika, the institution’s public relations officer, said the university would not comment on the lecturer’s private affairs.

“We are not denying that he is our staff, but whatever he did and what happened, it is his private life. The girl in question is not our student, and everything happened outside our institution,” he told PM News.

AAU Online News, a Facebook platform that publishes reports about activities within the university community, also confirmed the lecturer’s death in a post on Tuesday.

The platform described the development as “shocking” while mourning the loss of the academic.

“It is with deep sadness and shock that we received the news of the passing of Dr. Matthew, a lecturer in the Faculty of Medical Laboratory Science, Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma,” the post reads.

“His death is a painful loss to the university community, his colleagues, students, family, friends, and loved ones. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, students, and everyone mourning this great loss.”
