Actress Debbie Shokoya has revealed that her close friends spread rumours that her husband used “jazz” on her to win her love and marry her.
In an interview with fellow actress Bimpe Akintunde on the Iriri Mi podcast, Debbie said she was shocked to discover that the people behind the rumours were those she once trusted.
“Those I called my people, my friends, were the ones who said I was hypnotised. The same people I held dear, the ones I trusted with my heart. But today, I realise I have no one left,” she said.
The actress explained that the experience left her disappointed but drew her closer to God.
“As I entered this year, I told God I wouldn’t try to control anything anymore. I left everything to Him. And truly, He has brought meaning into my life.”
Debbie, who traditionally got engaged in February 2023, is married to Adetola, popularly known as Oremi Atata.
The actress has often referred to her husband as her biggest supporter and motivator. She once described him as her “slave driver” in a post, noting how he constantly pushes her to reach greater heights.
In August 2024, the couple welcomed their first child, a baby girl, one year after Debbie suffered a miscarriage that almost took her life. Sharing the news, she expressed gratitude to God, describing the birth as a testimony of His faithfulness.
They returned to Nigeria in October to a warm reception from family and loved ones, with Debbie posting photos and videos of the grand welcome on social media.
Despite the challenges and rumours, Debbie said she remains grateful for her husband, who she described as her best friend, and the strong support from both their families.
She added, “Looking back, I see clearly—God took those people out of my life for a reason.”
In January, Debbie had announced that she was starting the year with a renewed focus on peace and growth. She said she was done with drama and negativity, and would only give her energy to things that mattered.
