Justice K. B. Olawoyin of the Oyo State High Court, Ibadan, has scheduled Tuesday, January 13, 2025, for the ruling on the bail applications filed by ex-Queen Naomi Silekunola, Agidigbo FM owner Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, and Islamic High School Principal Abdulahi Fasasi on the Ibadan Stampede case.
The trio is facing trial over the tragic Ibadan Stampede that occurred during a Christmas funfair at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, in December 2024, which claimed the lives of at least 35 children.
The suspects, represented by top legal professionals including Senior Advocates of Nigeria Musibau Adetunmbi and Adekunle Sobaloju, filed for bail on Tuesday.
The state’s legal team, led by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Abiodun Aikomo, filed a counter-application, arguing against their release.
During the five-hour session, each counsel presented their case, urging the court to grant bail, citing insufficient evidence to justify continued detention.
The accused remain in custody at the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Agodi, pending the court’s decision.
The tragedy has sparked widespread calls for justice, with many decrying systemic failures that led to the devastating loss of lives at the Ibadan Stampede.
