A Magistrate Court sitting in Sagamu, Ogun State, has postponed the trial of Adeniyi Kayode, the driver involved in the Lexus SUV accident that claimed two lives and left boxing star Anthony Joshua injured. The case has now been adjourned to March 17, 2026.

Kayode, who is facing charges bordering on reckless driving, appeared before the court on Wednesday. During the proceedings, R.D. Kadiri, counsel representing the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP), informed the court that additional time was required to compile evidence and secure witnesses.

Kadiri explained that the police had already transmitted the case file to the Ogun State DPP and that the prosecution needed adequate time to review the documents and prepare for trial. Following the submission, Magistrate Olufunilayo Somefun approved the request and fixed March 17 as the new hearing date.

Earlier, on January 20, Richard Nigiwe, counsel to the police, had also sought an adjournment to allow the prosecution duplicate the case file and forward it to the state’s attorney-general through the DPP for legal guidance. Although defence counsel Olalekan Abiodun opposed the application, insisting that the trial should commence since three witnesses were present in court, the magistrate ruled in favour of the prosecution. The matter was then adjourned to February 25 to allow the necessary legal steps to be taken.

The tragic incident occurred on December 29, 2025, when the Lexus SUV conveying Joshua and his entourage rammed into a stationary truck near the Sinoma area of Sagamu while travelling from Lagos.

Although the former world heavyweight champion sustained only minor injuries, two of his close associates — Kevin Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami — lost their lives in the crash. Ghami was Joshua’s long-time friend and strength and conditioning coach, while Latif served as his personal trainer.

Joshua was later treated at Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, Lagos, and discharged on December 31, 2025, after doctors confirmed his condition had stabilised.
