A female corps member serving in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Maiduguri, Borno State, has died after reportedly falling ill during her stay at the camp.
The identity of the deceased has not been disclosed.
The incident was confirmed on Tuesday by the Borno State NYSC Coordinator, Nasir Bello, who said the corps member died at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital after being taken there for treatment.
According to him, the corps member arrived at the camp with an existing medical condition and was never fully involved in camp activities.
“She died in the teaching hospital, not during drills. She reported to camp, and unfortunately, she has an underlying ailment,” Bello said.
He added that the corps member was assisted by medical personnel from the camp clinic during registration due to her health condition.
“She did not participate in any camp activity since her arrival because she wasn’t well. Even during her registration exercise, she was assisted by the clinic officers,” he stated.
Bello, however, declined to disclose the nature of her illness, advising that further inquiries be directed to medical authorities.
“You can go to a teaching hospital to find out and ask the doctor. It is not in my position to disclose that,” he added.

Meanwhile, conflicting accounts from sources within the camp suggested that the corps member collapsed shortly after an evening drill before being rushed to the clinic and later transferred to the hospital, where she was confirmed dead.
A camp security source said she collapsed in her hostel after the evening activities.
“We had a successful drill that day… But in the evening, the lady collapsed. She was rushed to the camp clinic and later taken to the hospital in town, where she was confirmed dead,” the source said.
Another corps member alleged that the deceased may have been diabetic and was unable to access her medication.
“I learnt she is a diabetic patient. Her drugs were seized at the gate when she was coming in. She has not been taking her drugs,” the source claimed.
The NYSC authorities have not confirmed the claims, while investigations into the circumstances surrounding her death are expected to continue.
