China has called on the international community to respect Nigeria’s sovereignty following a recent threat by the United States to take military action against the West African nation.

In a statement released through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Beijing reaffirmed its support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration and commended the government for pursuing a development path suited to Nigeria’s national realities.

Speaking during a press briefing on Tuesday in Beijing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning emphasized China’s opposition to foreign interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs.

She said, “As Nigeria’s strategic partner, China opposes any attempt by foreign powers to use religion or human rights as a pretext to meddle in another country’s internal affairs or impose sanctions and military threats.”

Her comments come in response to recent reports that the United States, under the leadership of President Donald Trump, threatened possible military intervention in Nigeria over alleged persecution of Christians.

China’s remarks underscore its long-standing policy of non-interference and its commitment to strengthening diplomatic and economic ties with Nigeria.
