Award-winning author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has accused Euracare Hospital in Lagos of deliberately delaying the inquest into the death of her 21-month-old son, describing the hospital’s actions as a “monstrous, cynical game.”

She also made public a letter dated April 16, addressed to the hospital’s board chairman, in which she outlined what she described as obstruction and delay tactics by the medical facility as her family seeks accountability.

Her son, Nkanu, one of her twins, died on January 7, 2026, following complications during preparatory medical procedures.

Following the incident, Adichie issued a legal notice to the hospital, alleging medical negligence and professional misconduct contributed to his death. The Lagos State Judiciary later opened an inquest into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy on April 14.

However, on June 2, a Lagos High Court ordered a temporary suspension of the inquest after Euracare filed an application challenging the process.

Adichie said the hospital’s conduct worsened after her April correspondence, accusing it of deliberately creating “delays and distractions” in the case.

In the letter, she alleged that the hospital’s medical director, Tosin Majekodunmi, initially admitted to the family that anaesthesiologist Titus Ogundare administered an excessive dose of “propofol,” which she claimed led to the child’s death.

She further stated that the medical director, who had initially been compassionate toward the family, later became withdrawn in subsequent interactions.

Adichie also alleged that the anaesthesiologist appeared indifferent during discussions about the incident, describing him as “smiling and adjusting the air conditioner” during a review meeting.

The author further claimed that the hospital provided incomplete and inconsistent medical records, saying they failed to include documentation relating to the anaesthesiologist whose actions she believes were central to the case.

She also alleged that Euracare incorrectly listed bacterial and fungal meningitis as the cause of death on her son’s death certificate.
