Seyi Makinde has expressed concern for the families of schoolchildren and teachers abducted by bandits in Oyo State as Nigerians marked Eid-el-Kabir and Children’s Day celebrations.

The governor, in a message shared on his official X account on Wednesday, said his thoughts were with the victims’ families and security operatives working to secure their freedom.

The victims were kidnapped nearly two weeks ago after gunmen attacked three schools in Oriire Local Government Area on May 15, abducting several pupils, including toddlers, alongside teachers.

During the attack, a teacher identified as Adesiyan Adegboye was reportedly killed, while another teacher, Michael Oyedokun, was later beheaded in captivity, sparking public outrage and calls for urgent intervention.

Reacting to the development, Makinde acknowledged the pain being experienced by affected families during what should have been a joyful season.

“As we mark this year’s Eid and Children’s Day, our thoughts are with every family awaiting the return of their loved ones, and with security agencies working to keep our communities safe,” he wrote.

The governor also assured residents that efforts were ongoing to ensure the victims returned safely.

“We are working to ensure the safe return of those who were kidnapped in Oriire LGA. May this holy season fill our State with peace,” he added.

Reports indicate that the kidnappers have reportedly opened communication with the state government, although it remains unclear whether the discussions involve the governor directly or representatives of the administration.

This year’s Children’s Day celebration coincided with the 2026 Eid-el-Kabir festivities, marking a rare overlap between the two occasions.
