Former Chad President’s Son, Kaka Derby, was reportedly shot dead just 24 hours after succeeding his father, who was killed in combat.

There is uncertainty in Chad over reports that Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, who succeeded his father on Tuesday, was assassinated.

The BBC cited various Chadian media stories about an alleged shootout.

The alleged incident was said to have occurred as a result of a feud within the Déby family over Mahamat’s appointment.

However, the private Tchadinfos website cited several anonymous sources as denying the suspected shooting incident in a series of tweets.

“The Transitional Military Council’s president is still alive and well. Tchadifos said there was never any shooting at the palace and no quarrels with [Mahamat’s] brother Zakaria.

According to security sources cited by Toubou Media, Mahamat was wounded in a shootout caused by a “divergence within the family.”

Déby, who married many times and had an undisclosed number of children, had a huge family.

Meanwhile, the pro-government Alwihda Info website confirmed that gunshots were heard in Ati, 378 kilometres (234 miles) east of N’Djamena, after prisoners attempted to flee.

After the deployment of more troops to the area, the website stated that “calm had been restored.”

The BBC stated that it is closely monitoring the situation.

On Tuesday, the army declared Deby’s death, claiming he died of injuries suffered during a clash with rebels.
