Nigerians are reacting on Twitter in disapproval of the death sentence handed to a 22-year-old man by a Kano Upper Shari’a Court on Monday for blaspheming Prophet Muhammad.

Yahaya Sharif-Aminu, a resident of Sharifai in Kano metropolis, was accused of committing blasphemy against the prophet in a song he circulated via WhatsApp in March.

The song caused riots throughout the city.

Protesters burnt down his family home demanding his prosecution, leading to his arrest.

The singer had gone into hiding after sharing the song, which praised an imam from the Tijaniya Muslim brotherhood to the point where it gave him higher status than the prophet.

Although Mr Sharif-Aminu has an option to appeal to a secular court, observers say Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje might not sign the death sentence.

The incident caused riots in the city. His family house was burnt down in the process.
