Armed bandits have killed one person and abducted a husband and wife during a pre-dawn attack on Makera town in Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger State.
Security sources said the incident happened around 2:30 a.m. on May 3, when armed men stormed the community along the Kontagora–Lagos highway.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama, posting on his X handle, said the attackers shot a man identified as Aminu Yusufa, who later died while receiving treatment in hospital.
“The attackers reportedly shot a man identified as Aminu Yusufa, who later died while receiving treatment at a hospital in Makera,” he wrote.
The assailants also kidnapped a couple, Alhaji Umaru Garba and Hajiya Marwa Umaru, and whisked them away to an unknown destination.
Police sources said the Divisional Police Officer quickly mobilised a joint team of officers and local vigilantes in response to the attack, while efforts are ongoing to rescue the victims and track the suspects.
In a separate development, residents of Woko community in Borgu Local Government Area successfully repelled another bandit attack on the night of May 2 at about 10:15 p.m.
The attackers reportedly entered the village shooting sporadically, but were met with resistance from residents who organised themselves to fight back.

During the clash, one of the attackers was killed while others escaped with gunshot injuries.
A police tactical unit later arrived at the scene alongside local hunters and vigilantes, recovering the body of the dead bandit as well as a locally made firearm.
Security has since been reinforced in the affected areas as investigations into both incidents continue.
