Just like former president, Muhammadu Buhari, the Awujale of Ijebu land, Oba Sikiru Adetona bites the dust.

The Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, has died at the age of 91.

The first-class monarch died on Sunday, just hours after the death of his longtime friend and former president Muhammadu Buhari was announced.

Born on May 10, 1934, Oba Adetona reigned for more than 64 years, having ascended the throne on April 2, 1960. He was one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning monarchs.

The late monarch was widely respected for his role in preserving Yoruba culture and tradition, especially through the promotion of the annual Ojude Oba festival in Ijebu Ode.

Concerns about his health had grown in recent weeks after he was absent from the 2025 edition of Ojude Oba, held on Sunday, June 8.

Spokesman of the Awujale’s palace, Fassy Yusuf, told reporters at the time that the monarch had recently been discharged from a Lagos hospital and was recuperating at home.

“The Awujale has been in Lagos for some time now. About two weeks ago, he was hospitalised. But he has been discharged and is back home in Lagos,” Yusuf said in an interview with journalists.

“He is just taking some time to rest. At over 90, it is normal to take a break. It is nothing to worry about.”

The monarch’s wife, Olori Kemi Adetona, stood in for him at the festival and received dignitaries and age-grade groups who came to pay homage.

Oba Adetona was known for his outspoken stance on issues affecting the Yoruba people and Nigeria at large. His reign saw significant development in Ijebuland and a rise in the cultural relevance of the Ojude Oba festival.

Details of funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the royal family and Ogun State Government.
