Atiku Abubakar Calls For Improved Crowd Management After Twin Stampedes In Abuja And Anambra

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic stampedes that claimed numerous lives during food distribution events in Abuja and Okija, Anambra State, early Saturday.

Statement on the Twin Tragedies

Atiku, in a message shared on his X handle, described the incidents as heartbreaking, particularly given their proximity to a similar tragedy in Ibadan, Oyo State, which claimed about 35 lives, mostly children.

“It is with a heavy heart and deep sorrow that I receive yet again the heartbreaking news of lives lost in tragic stampedes… Organizers of such large-scale events must take the utmost care in crowd management,” Atiku Abubakar stated.

Call for Accountability and Safety

Atiku emphasized the urgent need for event organizers to prioritize safety, urging meticulous crowd management practices to prevent further loss of life. He also expressed support for police investigations into the causes of these tragedies.

Condolences and Prayers

On behalf of my family, I extend my sincerest condolences to those who have lost loved ones in today’s tragic events. Our thoughts and prayers are with the grieving families, that they may find solace and with the departed, that they may rest in eternal peace,” Atiku Abubakar said.

Broader Implications

These twin incidents, coupled with the recent Ibadan funfair tragedy, highlight systemic challenges in managing large gatherings, especially during charitable events.

As authorities continue to investigate, the call for better planning, crowd control, and safety measures remains critical to avoid similar occurrences in the future.
