What was meant
to be a surprise party eventually turned out to be a marriage proposal for
55-year-old Yeni Kuti.The firstborn
of the Afro legend, Fela Ransome-Kuti, she would not forget her 55th birthday of Tuesday
May 24, 2016 in a jiffy.
The venue was
at the Prince of Anthony Hotel. Here, family members and friends had converged
on the same place where Yeni’s late dad contracted his historic marriage of 27
wives.
The surprise
party was said to be put together by Mallam Abdul Okwechime and Akin Adeoya, of
the Hotels 1960, owners of the Prince of Anthony.
As she entered
and was wished a happy birthday, she was indeed surprised at the gathering. What
surprised her most was when her longtime partner, Theo Lawson, proposed to her.
Guests were treated to sumptuous meals and a performance
from Afrobeat maestro, Femi Kuti, who is also Yeni’s
younger brother.

Yeni was married but divorced to Femi
Segun, a veteran broadcaster, who died a few years ago from
injuries he sustained from a bike accident. Their union is blessed with a
daughter, Rolari.
