Academic activities are set to resume immediately at Lagos State University, Lagos State University of Education and Lagos State University of Science and Technology following the suspension of an industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
The union announced the decision on Friday in a joint statement signed by Olusegun Babalola, Coordinator of the Steering Committee, ASUU-LASU; Grace Abimbola, Acting Chairman, ASUU-LASUED; and Murisiku Onigemo, Chairman, ASUU-LASUSTECH.
According to TVC News, the suspension followed negotiations between the union and the Lagos State Government over lecturers’ welfare and the implementation of outstanding agreements.
The development is expected to ease the disruption experienced by students and parents at the three state-owned institutions during the strike.
“Our struggle for improved staff welfare and the implementation of vital academic agreements has reached a significant milestone, largely due to the collective support of well-meaning individuals and organisations,” the statement said.
Union Appreciates Stakeholders
ASUU thanked individuals and groups that supported its demands throughout the industrial action and negotiations with the state government.
Those acknowledged included media organisations, civil society groups, traditional rulers, students, parents and other stakeholders who contributed to efforts to resolve the dispute.
The union also recognised the roles played by the Joint Action Front, Education Rights Concern and Campaign for Democratic Workers Rights, describing their advocacy as supportive of quality public tertiary education.
Traditional rulers were commended for their interventions, while students and parents were praised for their patience and understanding during the period of disruption.
With the suspension announced, lecturers have been directed to return to their classrooms with immediate effect.

Further Engagement With Lagos Government
Despite suspending the strike, the union said discussions with the Lagos State Government would continue until all unresolved matters concerning staff welfare were fully addressed.
ASUU maintained that the suspension marked progress in its efforts to secure improved working conditions and ensure the implementation of agreements reached with the government.
The union’s decision brings an immediate end to the industrial action at the three institutions, although further negotiations are expected to focus on the outstanding welfare-related demands.
