On Saturday, the Anambra State Government has expressed profound grief following the tragic stampede at a rice-sharing event in Okija town, Ihiala Local Government Area.

The incident resulted in the loss of several lives, including women, children, pregnant women, and the elderly.

Governor Soludo’s Response:

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Christian Aburime, Governor Chukwuma Soludo extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased.

He acknowledged the Obi Jackson Foundation, led by Chief Ernest Obiejesi, for its noble intentions in organizing the event but stressed the need for improved safety protocols in future distributions.

Actions and Recommendations:

  • The Anambra State Government has launched an investigation into the incident to identify the root causes and address any lapses in safety measures.
  • Moving forward, the government recommends the following for charitable activities:
    • Establish multiple distribution points to reduce crowd congestion.
    • Prioritize vulnerable groups, such as the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with disabilities.
    • Employ trained personnel for crowd control and assistance.
    • Conduct public awareness campaigns to educate beneficiaries on safety protocols.

Commitment to Safety:

Governor Soludo of the Anambra State Government emphasized the importance of structured and safer approaches to aid distribution, ensuring the well-being of the beneficiaries remains paramount.

This tragic event serves as a reminder of the need for meticulous planning and safety measures in community outreach programs, especially during the festive season.
