A Kuje Magistrate Court on Wednesday granted bail of N500,000 to a federal lawmaker Alex Ikwechegh accused of assaulting a Bolt driver Stephen Abuwatseya.

Mr Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Ikwechegh on Zamfara Crescent in Maitama, Abuja on October 27 when a dispute arose concerning the method of delivery.

The lawmaker hit him severally and threatened to make the driver “disappear” without consequences.

He also told the driver that the inspector general of police (IGP) could not save him from his fury.

Following public outrage after the video of the clash went viral, the police interrogated the lawmaker acting on a petition by Abuwatseya.

According to the police, the lawmaker showed disregard for the office of the IGP which Kayode Egbetokun currently occupies.

However, in a statement, Ikwechegh said he was sorry for his actions, noting that they were unbecoming of a public official.

He said he would be seeking counselling on how to manage such situations better next time.

However, on Wednesday, he was arraigned on three counts of abuse of office, assault and threat to life.

The Abia representative pleaded not guilty to the charges.

His lawyer made an oral application for bail which was granted by His Worship Abubakar Sai’id.

The judge ruled that he is to produce two sureties in the like sum of N500,000. The sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and must provide utility bills as proof of residence.

The case was adjourned to November 8.
