Alaafin’s Coronation: As the coronation of the 46th Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, approaches, the Oyo State government has heightened security across the ancient city and its environs in anticipation of the grand event scheduled for Saturday, April 5, 2025.

Oba Owoade, who officially received his staff and instrument of office on January 13, 2025, succeeds the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi. He completed the traditional Oro Ipebi rites on March 29.
The coronation will be held at Oliveth Baptist High School in Oyo, with other venues including Ladigbolu Grammar School, Durbar Stadium, the Oba Lamidi Adeyemi Mini Stadium, and the Alaafin’s Palace also designated for related events.
Dignitaries expected include Governor Seyi Makinde, traditional rulers, government officials, foreign diplomats, and former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Over 200 Oyo indigenes based in Canada are also expected to attend.
In preparation, police and security personnel have been stationed at key locations including Owoade, Akesan, Isale Oyo, and Jabata. A senior police official confirmed full readiness to maintain peace and order.
Local hotels have reached full capacity, with facility upgrades underway to accommodate the influx of visitors. Akesan Market and surrounding markets will be temporarily closed to allow market men and women to participate in the historic ceremony.
