The battle for the Alaafin of Oyo throne has taken a legal turn as Prince Lukman Gbadegesin, one of the contenders, has filed a lawsuit at the Oyo State High Court, challenging the appointment of Prince Akeem Owoade as the new Alaafin.
The suit, filed on February 12, demands the nullification of Owoade’s appointment, arguing that it violates the Chiefs Law of Oyo State (2000) and the Registered Alaafin Chieftaincy Declaration of 1961.
Gbadegesin Moves to Stop Owoade’s Coronation
Through his lawyer, Kunle Sobaloju (SAN), Gbadegesin is seeking an injunction to prevent Owoade from assuming the throne or performing royal duties. The Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, the Attorney General of Oyo State, and 11 others are listed as defendants.
“The governor’s approval of Owoade’s appointment within five days of its presentation was unlawful, unconstitutional, invalid, null, and void,” Gbadegesin argued in his suit.
Claims of an Unfair Selection Process
Gbadegesin maintains that the Oyomesi (kingmakers) had already chosen him as the rightful candidate before Governor Makinde’s approval of Owoade’s selection. He argues that:
- The process excluded some rightful kingmakers, who were neither suspended nor removed.
- His nomination by the Agunloye Ruling House followed the legal process, making his selection lawful and valid.
Demands Before the Court
Gbadegesin is urging the court to:
✅ Declare him the rightful Alaafin of Oyo as per the Chief’s Law of Oyo State.
✅ Direct the Oyo State Governor to approve his appointment.
✅ Set aside Owoade’s appointment, declaring it unlawful, unconstitutional, and void.
✅ Issue an injunction preventing Owoade from assuming the throne or receiving any royal benefits.
State Government Prepares for Coronation
Despite the lawsuit, the Oyo State Government has proceeded with plans for Owoade’s coronation. A coronation committee has already been set up, holding its inaugural meeting last week.
With the legal battle underway, the fate of the Alaafin of Oyo throne remains uncertain.
