They announced their shock split after three years of marriage on Friday.
And Adele and Simon Konecki are said to have made the decision to go their separate ways before Christmas – amid claims he could get half her £145 million fortune, reports The Mirror.
Rumours over the strained state of the pair’s marriage began swirling after charity entrepreneur Simon, 45, showed up to this year’s Brit Awards in February without the songstress, 30, by his side – instead choosing to attend with friend Sid Owen.
The publication reports the couple did not sign a pre-nup before they tied the knot in 2016.
Adele’s no show – having previously been a staple at the awards – was said to have been a clear indicator that all was not well between the pair.
A source told the website: ‘The Brits were confirmation in a way. Everyone was hoping Adele would come but she stayed away. Things had already broken down for a while.
Simon’s company Life Water sponsored the event and he hosted a table.
The source continued: ‘There were whispers running up to the Brits that Adele and Simon’s relationship was over, but Simon was in such a good mood at the party, everyone hoped it wasn’t true,’ said the friend.
The couple’s last joint appearance was a month earlier at an Elton John concert in LA.
The former couple – who share son Angelo, six, are now said to be gearing up for a multi-million pound divorce – which could see Simon entitled to up to half of the Tottenham-born hitmaker’s £145m fortune.
It was also reported that Adele and Simon – who began their romance in 2011 and are said to be amicably separating- started drifting apart due to his travel with work and her discovery of a new social circle in LA and NYC.
It was also claimed that the pair’s ‘unconventional relationship’ had worked for some time, in the end they were ‘barely together’.
Adele – who was pictured on a girls night out with actress Jennifer Lawrence in March – was said to have enjoyed being stateside while Simon preferred to be in the UK with family and friends, combined with work trips which took him away from his wife.
He is also said to have no interest in the ‘showbiz circle’ or attending red carpets – while Adele – now thought to be recording a new album – enjoyed her network of celebrity friends.
Her friends in the US – who also include Amy Schumer – are said to be comforting her as she adjusts to life post-split.
The star had a night out with Jennifer, 28, in New York in March, where she was seen doing shots at a gay bar.
She was also said to have been invited on-stage by drag performers – where she said ‘Hi, my name’s Adele’ followed by ‘at the moment I’m a stay-at-home mum.’
It was claimed in The Sun the night out was a ‘divorce party’ for the star, as she looked forward to the future, with Jennifer also celebrating her engagement to Cooke Maroney.
Throughout the difficult time, the pair are said to be moving forward with ‘mutual love and respect’ for their beloved son Angelo.
MailOnline has contacted representatives for Adele for comment.
Just hours after the announcement, as fans of the iconic singer flooded Twitter with break-up album anticipation, a report emerged claiming that Adele had gifted her home in Los Angeles to her estranged husband, months before publicising their split.
According to property records obtained by Us Weekly, an intrafamily transfer and dissolution took place in February, at which time Simon, 45, bought the property in his own name.
Furthermore, a January deed to the house reportedly reads, ‘Adele Laurie Blue Adkins, spouse of Simon Konecki, hereby grants to Simon Konecki, a married man as his sole and separate property.’
Legal documents show Adele signed over a £500,000 house to Simon, whose charity water business is based in the city.
During their marriage, they split their time between their gated Beverly Hills home, a £40 million property in Kensington, West London, and another home in Brighton.
The couple were last seen together backstage at an Elton John concert in LA on January 25.
Sources insist the separation is ‘unlikely’ to turn nasty.
‘Simon’s not like that. He’s got his own money. His only concern now is that he and Adele remain the best parents they can be to Angelo,’ one insider told The Mail on Sunday.
It is understood that Adele is being comforted by her friends, including Hunger Games actress Jennifer Lawrence with whom she was spotted partying in a New York gay bar in March.
Highly secretive about her romance with Konecki, Adele only confirmed the pair had married in 2016 when she referred to him as her ‘husband’ on stage at the 2017 Grammy Awards.
During a tearful Album of the Year acceptance speech, she said: ‘My husband, my son, you’re the only reason I do it.’
In a handful of interviews, Adele has gushed about her love for Konecki who she has credited with helping her recover from vocal cord surgery in 2011.
‘He’s wonderful and he’s proud of me but he doesn’t care about what I do or what other people think,’ she once said.
‘He looks after me. I don’t think I would have gotten through the recovery for my surgery if it hadn’t been for him.’
More recently, the singer spoke of her longing to expand her family.
‘My womb is starting to ache a little bit,’ she said. ‘It’s like, ‘Baby, baby, baby. Need a baby.’ I’m not pregnant. I won’t get pregnant until the end of the tour.’
Konecki was previously married to stylist Clary Fisher. They have a nine-year-old daughter and split in 2010. He met Adele the following year, after reportedly being introduced by Ed Sheeran.
Social media erupted at the news of Adele’s separation from her husband with many fans rejoicing that the split may inspire her to complete her fourth album – the singer’s songs of heartbreak are a hallmark of her multi-million selling 19, 21 and 25 albums.
‘Adele and her husband just separated. Music charts, get ready for the world’s greatest breakup album ever… again! #Adele #divorce,’ one fan wrote on Twitter.
