Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has ordered the immediate suspension of all activities of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in motor parks across the state as part of efforts to improve security and restore order.

The directive was announced on Thursday after a meeting of the Osun State Security Council, which was presided over by the governor.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, the government said the decision followed a review of the security situation in the state and concerns over activities within motor parks.

Adeleke directed the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to halt every activity carried out by the union in motor parks across Osun, while clarifying that transport operations in the parks should continue uninterrupted.

The governor also suspended the collection of levies in all motor parks and instructed security operatives to arrest anyone claiming to act as an official or executive of the NURTW.

“I hereby direct the Police and other security agencies to stop all activities of the union in all our parks across the state. I am not saying you should close the parks, but you should not allow anyone to operate in the parks in the name of the union.

“Anyone found contravening this order should be arrested for possible prosecution for disturbance of public peace,” the governor said.

According to the statement, security chiefs present at the meeting assured the governor that the directive would be fully enforced across the state.

To strengthen implementation, Adeleke also approved the immediate establishment of a Rapid Response Squad made up of personnel drawn from all security agencies operating in Osun State.

The security council meeting was attended by representatives of the Nigeria Police Force from the Osun State Command and Zone 11, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Air Force, Nigerian Navy, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigerian Correctional Service, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and the Western Nigeria Security Network (Amotekun).

Also present at the meeting were the Deputy Governor, the Chief of Staff, the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters.
