Nigerian music star Adekunle Gold has spoken about the role genotype compatibility played in his decision to marry fellow singer Simi, revealing that they checked their genotypes when they first met.
Speaking on the One 54 podcast, Gold said the test was necessary for him and Simi to establish whether they could safely build a future together. He disclosed that Simi is AA and explained that he would not have proceeded with the marriage if she had the SS genotype.
Gold used his experience to stress the importance of genotype testing, particularly for people entering relationships and those considering having children.
“There is so much awareness to be done. People need to understand that if you have sickle cell, forget about love; you can’t be with someone with sickle cell too. It makes no sense to bring a child into the world who will be sickly,” he said.
“There’s no way I would have married my wife Simi if she was sickle cell. The first thing we did when we met was a genotype test to know if we matched. If we didn’t, I wouldn’t have married her. She is AA.”
Sickle cell disease is a genetic blood disorder in which red blood cells become rigid and take on a sickle or crescent shape, potentially resulting in serious health complications.
Gold has previously been open about his own experience with sickle cell disease. In 2022, he spoke publicly about living with the condition and further drew attention to it through his song, ‘5 Star’.

The singer has since continued to advocate for people living with sickle cell disease and promote greater understanding of the condition.
In July 2024, Gold said his advocacy was driven by a desire to help people living with the condition “feel safe and supported”.
His efforts also extended beyond awareness campaigns. In 2025, the singer introduced a free health insurance programme designed to provide support for 1,000 people living with sickle cell disease.
