The family of the late General Sani Abacha has strongly rejected claims by former Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida, that Abacha played a key role in annulling the June 12, 1993, presidential election.

In his newly released autobiography, A Journey in Service, Babangida blamed military officers, led by Abacha, the then Chief of Defence Staff, for the annulment, stating it happened “without his permission.”
Reacting in a statement signed by Mohammed Abacha, the family dismissed Babangida’s claims, insisting that as the sitting Head of State at the time, IBB held absolute executive power and bore sole responsibility for the decision.
They accused him of attempting to distort history and shift blame, urging Nigerians to be wary of “revisionist narratives” that manipulate public perception for political reasons.
The Abacha family further criticised Babangida’s autobiography, stating it failed to provide an honest account of past events.
