Nollywood actress Moji Afolayan has recounted her experience growing up in a polygamous household, explaining why she would not willingly marry a man who intends to have multiple wives.
The actress shared her views during an interview with African A-List, where she disclosed that her childhood experience shaped her attitude towards polygamy.
Moji explained that although she never wanted to become part of a polygamous family, her marriage eventually placed her in a situation involving a man who had been married previously. However, she clarified that her husband’s first wife had passed away before they got married.
She said she understood the difficulties associated with growing up in such an arrangement and would not wish the experience on another person.
The actress also expressed displeasure with people who interfere in marital matters on social media, describing them as online in-laws who criticise women without knowing what they endure behind closed doors.
Moji insisted that she had made her position on polygamy clear before getting married, stressing that she would not have chosen a man who planned to marry another wife while they were together.

“I grew up in a polygamous home, so I know what I experienced. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. Although the man I married was a widower, his wife had died before I married him.
“And considering the age at which I married him, someone who had been married before and already had children was where I was supposed to end up and spend the rest of my life? But God understood everything. That is how I ended up in his house.
“We have online in-laws who always interfere. They don’t know what the woman in the house is going through.
“I have said it before: I wouldn’t marry someone who would later take a second wife. I don’t have money, and you don’t have money. We both married each other as we were. It wasn’t someone who came from nowhere; I said this before I got married,” she said.
The actress further warned men against deliberately subjecting their wives to humiliation or unnecessary hardship, saying women could respond to the treatment they receive in their marriages.
She maintained that the way a man treats his wife could determine the kind of response he gets from her.
“If you think you can disgrace a woman, or punish her without reason, the woman will repay you manyfold.
“If you sow into a woman’s life, she will give back multiple seeds.
“If you sow aggression into your woman’s life, she will give you multiple aggressions.
“That is why I am still alive today, and my father played his part too,” she added.
