The Lagos State Government has begun installing boundary demarcation signposts in various parts of the state as part of efforts to prevent encroachment and disputes between neighbouring communities and bordering states.

The development was announced by the Lagos State Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development in a statement shared on Facebook on Monday.

The ministry said the exercise was designed to promote “peaceful co-existence among neighbouring and bordering communities” while reducing conflicts linked to boundary encroachment.

Speaking at the commencement of the installation, the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Kikelomo Bolarinwa, said the government was committed to ensuring that boundaries between Lagos communities and adjoining states were clearly identified in accordance with official specifications.

She said the state would rely on the boundaries established by the Office of the Surveyor-General, describing the placement of signposts as a practical measure to make the demarcations visible.

Bolarinwa explained that the initiative would help prevent encroachment by neighbouring states and ensure that residents living in border communities were properly identified for government welfare programmes.

She added that clearly defined boundaries would also facilitate infrastructure development, improve living conditions, strengthen economic activities in affected communities and help “reduce rural-urban drift in the State”.

The permanent secretary appealed to residents in border communities to protect the signposts and avoid actions capable of undermining the exercise or disrupting public order.

She specifically warned against the destruction of the newly installed structures, saying those responsible would face sanctions.

“Anyone found demolishing any of the installed signposts would be punished,” Bolarinwa said.

“The State Government will not be lenient with anyone who hampers social order, peaceful co-existence and the ease of business that Lagos State is known for,” she added.

Bolarinwa further assured residents that the state government would continue implementing programmes aimed at extending the benefits of democracy to communities across Lagos.

She said the government would achieve this through “the strategic cascading of the T.H.E.M.E.S Plus Agenda to communities across the State, especially rural communities”.

According to the ministry, the boundary demarcation exercise is part of the state’s broader objective of developing Lagos into “a 21st Century Economy” and achieving a “Greater Lagos”.

The government listed Eredo-Epe, the area around Mojoda, Itokin-Ijebu Ode Road, Ikorodu-Shagamu Road, Ojodu-Alagbole Road, Owode-Apa Road and the Seme border among locations where the boundary signposts have already been installed.
