Renowned Yoruba oral poet, actor and Ijala chanter, Chief Alabi Ogundepo, has died, leaving behind a rich legacy in Yoruba culture and literature.
Ogundepo, who was widely celebrated for his Ijala performances and contributions to the preservation of Yoruba heritage, died on Monday.
His family announced his death in a statement issued by Dupe Ogundepo, describing his passing as a major loss to Saki, Oyo State and Nigeria’s cultural community.
The family said the late cultural icon dedicated much of his life to Yoruba literature, oral traditions and the promotion of the values and heritage of his people.
“His presence commanded respect, while his words often inspired reflection and appreciation of our shared heritage.
“While the family mourns the passing of a beloved father, husband, grandfather, relative and friend, we are also comforted by the enduring legacy he leaves behind through his writings, relationships, values and contributions to society.
“Chief Alabi Ogundepo may have departed this world, but his voice, his poetry and the memories he created will continue to live on.”
The family added that arrangements for his funeral would be announced later.
Ogundepo was particularly known for his Ijala poetry, a traditional Yoruba art form associated with hunters. Through his performances, he celebrated hunters, narrated hunting experiences and helped preserve an important aspect of Yoruba oral tradition.
Reacting to his death, the Okere of Sakiland, Oba Khalid Olabisi Oyedepo III, expressed grief over the passing of the veteran artist.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the monarch acknowledged Ogundepo’s contributions to the cultural development and identity of Saki.

“The Okere of Sakiland, Oba Dr Surv. Khalid Oyeniyi Olabisi Oyedepo III, has expressed sadness over the death of renowned Yoruba traditional oral artist and legendary Ijala poet, Chief Alabi Ogundepo, who died on Monday at the age of 86,” the statement said.
The monarch highlighted Ogundepo’s role in promoting the cultural heritage of Saki, noting that he was also responsible for composing the Saki Anthem.
He described the deceased as “a distinguished custodian of Yoruba cultural heritage whose talent and dedication helped preserve Ijala poetry for successive generations.”
