The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has sealed several markets, shopping complexes and commercial establishments in the Ikotun-Igando area over repeated violations of the state’s environmental sanitation laws.
The enforcement exercise, carried out on Saturday by LAWMA’s Project WISE West team, targeted markets and businesses along the LASU-Igando Road corridor in Alimosho Local Government Area.
According to the agency, the affected traders and business owners repeatedly dumped refuse on road medians despite receiving several warnings, sensitisation campaigns and notices informing them of the planned enforcement.
The latest operation follows a similar exercise recently conducted along the Yaba-Ojuelegba corridor, where LAWMA said compliance with sanitation regulations improved after enforcement activities.
Speaking on the development, LAWMA Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the success of the earlier operation encouraged the agency to extend the exercise to other parts of the state.
He disclosed that the agency had also begun issuing notices of intention to seal markets, shopping plazas, shops and other business premises along the Ojuelegba-Lawanson-Itire corridor ahead of another round of enforcement.

Among the facilities shut during Saturday’s operation were Owode Market, Omo Oba Shopping Complex, Oja Oba Market, Irewolede Market, Egan Junction Market, BoA Shopping Complex, Blissful Electronics Stores and other commercial premises found to have breached environmental sanitation regulations.
Gbadegesin said the affected markets and businesses would remain closed until they complied with the state’s environmental standards and implemented all corrective measures required by the agency.
He warned that dumping refuse on road medians, drainage channels and other unauthorised locations remained a violation of Lagos environmental laws, stressing that offenders would continue to face strict sanctions.
The LAWMA boss urged traders, market associations, business owners and property managers to maintain clean surroundings, work only with approved Private Sector Participant (PSP) waste operators and avoid illegal waste disposal practices.
He added that the agency would continue combining public awareness campaigns with enforcement measures to improve waste management, protect public infrastructure and promote a cleaner environment across Lagos.
