Sir Keir Starmer has officially stepped down as the United Kingdom’s prime minister, bringing his two-year tenure to an end as Andy Burnham prepares to lead a new Labour government.
Speaking outside 10 Downing Street on Monday, Starmer reflected on his time in office, saying he was leaving with pride over his administration’s achievements.
“I go with good grace, I go with a smile and I go proud of everything that we have achieved,” he said.
The outgoing prime minister also pledged his full support to Burnham as he takes over the leadership of the country.
After delivering his farewell remarks, Starmer travelled to Buckingham Palace, where he formally submitted his resignation to King Charles III.
In a statement, Buckingham Palace confirmed the development, saying: “Sir Keir Starmer MP had an audience of The King this morning and tendered his resignation as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury, which His Majesty was graciously pleased to accept.”
The palace added: “Lady Starmer was also received by The King.”
Following Starmer’s resignation, Burnham, who emerged as Labour Party leader on Friday, was invited by King Charles III to form a government, officially making him the United Kingdom’s new prime minister.

Burnham is expected to deliver his inaugural speech outside Downing Street before unveiling the members of his new Cabinet.
Ahead of the transition, Prisons Minister Lord Timpson resigned on Monday as Burnham began restructuring the government.
