The State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Federal Capital Territory chapter, has suspended its ongoing strike involving primary and secondary school teachers with immediate effect.

The decision was announced on Sunday during a press briefing in Gwagwalada by SWEC Chairman, Mr Abdullahi Shafa, following an emergency meeting to review the intervention of FCT Minister, Mr Nyesom Wike, in the industrial dispute declared on April 20, 2026.

Shafa explained that the suspension followed government commitments aimed at addressing the demands of teachers across the territory.

According to him, the minister approved a combined monthly intervention of N5 billion to resolve outstanding issues affecting teachers.

“The minister approved the release of N2 billion monthly from FCT Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), plus N3 billion from the 10 per cent IGR accruing to the Area Councils, to implement the 40 per cent peculiar allowance and settle outstanding entitlements of primary school teachers,” he said.

On promotion-related concerns, Shafa noted that the minister also promised to engage the Chairman of the FCT Civil Service Commission to remove restrictions affecting promotions and to review the 2024 promotion exercise.

Following the resolution, the union directed all primary and secondary school teachers in the FCT to resume work on Monday, April 27.

He, however, warned that no teacher should face victimisation over participation in the strike, adding that the union would reassess its position if the agreements are not implemented.

Shafa also commended teachers for their unity during the industrial action and reaffirmed SWEC’s commitment to improving welfare and working conditions in the FCT education sector.
