At least 17 people have been reported dead after suspected gunmen attacked Mbalom community in Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State on Easter Sunday.
The attack adds to the growing security concerns in parts of the state, where rural communities have continued to experience repeated violent incidents.
Residents said the assailants stormed the area without warning, killing several people and burning down houses during the invasion.
While 17 bodies have been recovered so far, many individuals are still missing, with locals combing nearby bushes in search of possible survivors or additional victims.
The incident also led to the destruction of several homes and properties, leaving many residents displaced.

A resident, who spoke anonymously, described the situation as tragic and overwhelming.
“This is heartbreaking. People were caught unawares. Many are still missing.”
Attempts to get an official response from the spokesperson of the Benue State Police Command, Udeme Edet, were unsuccessful, as calls placed to her were not answered at the time of reporting.
