Veteran Nollywood actor Abiodun Ayoyinka has shared the challenges he faces despite becoming a household name for his role as Papa Ajasco.
In a recent conversation with media personality Lucky Udu, Ayoyinka revealed that the character’s trademark ownership by producer Wale Adenuga has limited his opportunities outside the iconic comedy series.
“The main issue is that particular character has been registered by Wale Adenuga. Anyone who wants to work with me outside wants me with the character, with everything that comes with it, but it has never been easy for me,” he explained.
He added, “I don’t have the right. I can’t use the name Papa Ajasco unless I seek permission. I can’t even wear the costume.”
The actor further disclosed that the strong association with Papa Ajasco has made it difficult for people to recognize him in other capacities.
“Because that character is so strong, they want to see me as Papa, dressed like Papa, looking like Papa. It’s always challenging for me to do anything else,” he said.
Ayoyinka also recounted his time working with the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture before retiring about five years ago and lamented the struggles he faces today.
“Life hasn’t been easy in recent years. I retired five years ago, and it hasn’t been simple to move around and connect with people,” he said.
