Algeria booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after a dramatic 1–0 extra-time victory over DR Congo in their round-of-16 match in Rabat on Tuesday.
The match remained goalless through regular time, with both sides struggling to create clear chances and cancelling each other out in midfield.
Goalkeepers Luca Zidane of Algeria and Dimitry Mpasi of DR Congo made crucial saves to keep the scoreline level, while Algeria’s dominance in possession was repeatedly thwarted by the Leopards’ organised defence.
It was substitute Anis Boulbina who broke the deadlock in the 119th minute. The midfielder combined with Ismaël Bennacer before curling a brilliant shot into the top corner, securing his first senior international goal and sending Algeria through to the next round.

DR Congo nearly stole the win in stoppage time, but Fiston Mayele’s header was deflected just wide, leaving the outcome to be decided in extra time.
The win sets up an exciting quarter-final clash between Algeria and Nigeria, who earned their spot in the last eight with a 4–0 demolition of Mozambique on Monday. The Super Eagles will face the Desert Foxes on Saturday, January 10, at 5 pm as they aim for a fourth AFCON title.
