The Federal Government has officially delivered on its promise to provide houses to each member of the Super Eagles squad that finished as runners-up at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), nearly two years after the tournament.

The presentation was made through the National Sports Commission (NSC) at the team’s base in Fez, Morocco, on Monday, just a day before Nigeria’s opening match in the 2025 AFCON.

The Super Eagles, then coached by Portuguese tactician Jose Peseiro, secured second place at the 2023 AFCON, held between January and February 2024, falling 2-1 to the host nation in the final.

Upon returning to Nigeria after the tournament, President Bola Tinubu honoured each player and member of the backroom staff with the Member of The Order of The Niger (MON) national award, alongside gifts of houses and land.

“The Federal Government, through the NSC, has fulfilled its 2024 pledge on housing rewards to the Super Eagles,” confirmed the team’s media officer, Promise Efoghe, via a dedicated WhatsApp media update.

NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko, Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, and Senator Abdul Ningi, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports, also confirmed that the national awards were issued in line with existing honours held by the players. They further stated that the housing and land allocations approved by President Tinubu have been fully processed, with Certificates of Occupancy formally issued.

Under the guidance of Franco-Malian coach Eric Chelle, the Super Eagles are preparing to compete for their fourth AFCON title. Nigeria, which missed out on qualification for the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, is placed in Group C. The team will face Tanzania on Tuesday, Tunisia on Saturday, and Uganda next Tuesday. Nigeria has previously won the continental trophy in 1980, 1994, and 2013.

Earlier this year, President Tinubu also honoured the Super Falcons with national awards and a $100,000 cash reward each for winning their 10th WAFCON title. Similar rewards were promised to the women’s senior basketball team, D’Tigress, following their fifth consecutive Women’s AfroBasket championship in August.
