Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has officially joined the Accord Party, just days after leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He made the announcement on Tuesday at the Banquet Hall of the Government House, in the presence of national and state leaders of the party.

According to his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, the governor also confirmed his intention to contest for a second term in 2026 under the “Thumb-Up” party. Adeleke revealed that he had actually joined the Accord Party more than a month ago.

“I joined the Accord Party more than a month ago, precisely on November 6, as a platform to seek re-election in 2026. This was after weeks of consultation and deliberations with stakeholders and opinion leaders,” Adeleke said.

He added that the decision was made in consultation with residents and key stakeholders of Osun State, with the goal of continuing his administration’s delivery of good governance and democratic dividends. “Stakeholders and residents of Osun State are aware of why we are taking this important decision. We intend to pursue a second term in office on the platform of the Accord Party to complete the ongoing delivery of good governance and democratic dividends, which have been applauded at home and abroad,” he stated.

Explaining why he chose the Accord Party, Adeleke said the party’s focus on welfarism resonates with his government’s priority on citizens’ and workers’ welfare. “Since I joined the party more than a month ago, I have been fascinated by the philosophy of this great party. The focus on people’s welfare should always be at the heart of public leadership. The primary essence of government is the welfare and well-being of the people,” he said.

The governor also welcomed party leaders into the Government House, stressing unity and inclusive leadership. “I welcome our party leaders into the Osun State Government House. You are now part of us, as I am also now part of you. We are united in progress and good intentions for the good people of Osun State and Nigeria at large,” he said.

Adeleke highlighted his administration’s achievements in infrastructure, social services, and overall governance, insisting that continuity is crucial for the state. “Osun voted for good governance in 2022, and they will support continuity in 2026. The mass of our people are for continuity, and Accord is our party for victory next year,” he said.

The governor formally resigned from the PDP on December 1, citing persistent leadership crises at the party’s national level. In a statement on Instagram, he noted that he had submitted his resignation to party officials in Sagba Abogunde, Ward 2, Ede North Local Government, on November 4, 2025.

“Due to the ongoing crisis within the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (#OfficialPDPNig) at the national level, I officially conveyed my resignation letter as a member to the party leadership in Sagba Abogunde, Ward 2, Ede North Local Government on November 4, 2025. I thank the party and its many members and supporters for the opportunities they have provided me, first as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and now as Governor of Osun State,” Adeleke stated.
