A Nigerian cardiologist based in the United States, Dr. Ikenna Erinne, has reportedly taken his own life following a legal setback in a bitter child support case involving his estranged wife.

The 36-year-old, originally from Anambra State, had been embroiled in a protracted custody and divorce battle, which ended with a US court ruling in favor of his ex-wife. The judgment mandated him to pay a hefty monthly child support fee of $15,000, a financial burden that allegedly pushed him to despair.

Reports indicate that Dr. Erinne, who had invested a substantial amount in legal proceedings, also lost his medical license amid the court battle. This devastating turn of events is believed to have led him to take his own life on Sunday, January 26.

Nigerian Cardiologist: A Nigerian-American, Clayton Udo, confirmed the incident in a post on social media, lamenting the challenges African men face in the US legal system. According to Udo, the cardiologist struggled under the weight of mounting legal expenses and the court ruling, which restricted his access to his children.

“He lost everything—the money, his career, and even the right to be with his kids,” Udo wrote. “This case exposes the financial and emotional strain that many African men go through in the American legal system.”

Nigerian Cardiologist: Another source, Obim Onujiogu, a member of the Nigerian community in the US, also confirmed Dr. Erinne’s passing. He described him as a dedicated physician and loving father, whose sudden demise has left many in shock.

Dr. Erinne’s funeral has been scheduled for Monday, February 3, 2025, at the Gary L. Kaufman Funeral Home in Elkridge, Maryland. Following the service, he will be laid to rest at Meadowridge Memorial Park.
