The Lagos State House of Assembly has announced its intention to await the return of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa before deciding on further actions regarding allegations of misconduct and financial impropriety.

Assembly spokesperson Olukayode Ogundipe, speaking at the Assembly complex in Alausa, Ikeja, revealed that the lawmakers would deliberate on next steps once Obasa is physically present. “When he’s seated with us, actions will be taken,” Ogundipe stated, adding that procedures, including a potential committee investigation or petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), would be adhered to.

Background on Obasa’s Removal

Obasa was removed as Speaker on January 13, 2025, after a majority vote by lawmakers, citing alleged corruption and misconduct. He was replaced by former Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda, who officially assumed office on Monday.

In response, Obasa dismissed the allegations as unfounded and claimed his removal was unconstitutional. Addressing supporters on Saturday, he stated, “If you want to claim that I’m corrupt, please prove it, let us see it,” while asserting that he remained the legitimate Speaker until proper procedures were followed.

Assembly’s Position

Ogundipe maintained that the removal process was lawful and constitutionally compliant. “The constitution is very clear about the process… the same procedure we used to remove him was duly followed,” he affirmed.

Heightened Security and Plenary Reschedule

The Assembly complex saw increased security on Monday, with police screening journalists and visitors. This followed Obasa’s public declaration questioning his removal.

The planned plenary session was rescheduled, reportedly to allow members to settle in and affirm the House’s peaceful state. Meranda, now Speaker, entered the Speaker’s office accompanied by supportive lawmakers.

Closing Note

While awaiting Obasa’s return, the Assembly remains poised to address the allegations and ensure procedural clarity in the leadership transition.
