Tottenham’s Cristian Romero Points Finger at Board for Club’s Struggles

Tottenham defender Cristian Romero has placed the blame for the club’s lack of progress squarely on the board, describing them as the “true responsible ones” after a disappointing run of just one win in seven games.

Voicing out following Sunday’s 4-3 defeat to Chelsea, Cristian Romero expressed frustration with the club’s situation and emphasized the need for change.

“Manchester City competes every year, Liverpool strengthens their squad, Chelsea does the same, doesn’t do well, strengthens again, and now they’re seeing results. These are the things to imitate,” the Argentine international said in comments that were widely circulated in British media.

“We need to realize that something is going wrong,” Cristian Romero continued. “Hopefully, they (the board) realize it.”

Tottenham broke their transfer record to sign Dominic Solanke in a deal worth up to £65 million ($83 million) in August, but most of their estimated £125 million spend in the summer was on teenage talents who have had limited impact on the first team.

With manager Ange Postecoglou facing potentially decisive matches—against Rangers in the Europa League on Thursday, a trip to bottom-of-the-table Southampton, and a League Cup quarterfinal against Manchester United—Romero’s comments underscore the pressure on the club to make meaningful changes. Postecoglou is the fifth manager, including caretakers, that Romero has played under since joining Tottenham in 2021.

“The last few years, it’s always the same—first, the players, then the coaching staff changes, and it’s always the same people responsible,” Romero added. “Hopefully they realize who the true responsible ones are and we move forward because it’s a beautiful club that, with the structure it has, could easily be competing for the title every year.”
