Champions League: Liverpool are making waves in this season’s Champions League, standing as the only team with a perfect record after a commanding 2-0 win over title-holders Real Madrid on Wednesday. The heavyweight clash at Anfield lived up to its billing, with last season’s runners-up Borussia Dortmund also securing a victory on the same night.

UCL: Alexis Mac Alister (Liverpool vs Real Madrid)

Real Madrid came into the match with an impressive eight-game unbeaten streak against Liverpool in the Champions League. But Arne Slot’s side, currently leading the Premier League, was too much to handle. Alexis Mac Allister broke the deadlock early in the second half, giving Liverpool the lead.

Kylian Mbappé, enduring a tough night in the Champions League, missed a golden opportunity to bring Real level when his penalty was saved after an hour. Mohamed Salah had his chance to score from the spot but failed to convert. Cody Gakpo, coming off the bench, sealed the win for Liverpool with a brilliant header in the 76th minute.

With five wins from five, Liverpool are not just unbeaten—they’re unstoppable in this revamped Champions League format. Their place in February’s knockout phase play-offs is now secure.

“It’s always special to play against a club like Real Madrid,” said Slot. “They’ve won this tournament so many times, they’re the reigning Champions League owner, and they’ve been a real thorn in Liverpool’s side over the years.”

As for Real Madrid, things are looking grim. With just six points from five games, they’ve lost three matches and are clinging to the very last qualifying spot for the knockouts. Coach Carlo Ancelotti encouraged Mbappé, who struggled throughout the match: “This is a tough moment for him, but we’ll support him and give him all the love he needs.”
