Nigerian-born British politician, Kate Anolue, has been sworn in as the mayor of Enfield, United Kingdom, following her election.

She had spent the “most quality years” of her life in Enfield after moving to the borough from her home town in Nanka, Anambra more than 40 years ago.

Anolue becomes the second black female mayor of Enfield.

She said: “I am proud and honoured to stand here as elected mayor of this great, vibrant and diverse borough of ours.

“My fellow councillors have placed a great privilege and responsibility upon me, and I want to express my sincere appreciation of you all for putting your trust in me.”

For the next year, she will devote most of her time to civic functions and will preside over council meetings, as well as act as the returning officer at elections.

Her charity work will be focused on tackling sickle cell anaemia, cancer and dementia, as well as other causes.

Another native of Anambra, Ernest Ezeajughi, was on May 1 sworn in as first black mayor of London borough of Brent.
