The Federal Government has appointed renowned musician Innocent “2Baba” Idibia as the new National Fire Safety Ambassador, tasking him with leading a nationwide campaign to raise awareness on fire prevention.

The announcement was made by Samuel Adeyemi, Controller General of the Federal Fire Service (FFS), during the closing ceremony of the 2025 National Fire Safety Week at the Service Headquarters on Friday.

Adeyemi explained that 2Baba was chosen because of his strong influence on public behaviour. He noted that “many Nigerians still treat fire outbreaks as ‘distant possibilities,’” a mindset he warned is dangerous and often leads to unnecessary tragedies.

This year’s Fire Safety Week featured various initiatives aimed at deepening citizens’ understanding of fire-prevention measures. Activities included a virtual town hall to launch the campaign, presentation of Group Life Insurance Scheme cheques to families of officers who lost their lives or were injured on duty, and the CG’s Cup and medal awards.

Firefighters also conducted extensive outreach across schools, markets, communities, and major business hubs nationwide, using roadshows, live demonstrations, and drills to teach practical fire-safety skills.

Adeyemi highlighted the impressive level of public involvement, describing it as “remarkable” and reflective of a “renewed national commitment to fire safety.” The event concluded by recognising individuals and organisations for their exemplary efforts in fire-risk reduction and compliance.

Speaking to the audience, Adeyemi encouraged recipients of certificates to share fire-safety knowledge within their homes, workplaces, and communities. On 2Baba’s role, he said, “As a National Fire Safety Ambassador, we expect him to inspire a new generation to embrace a culture of safety.”
