The African Action Congress has officially adopted Omoyele Sowore as its consensus presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.

The announcement was made during the party’s presidential primary, where Kayode Babayemi, chairman of the committee overseeing the exercise, said the decision reflected the confidence the party has in Sowore’s dedication to democratic values and national transformation.

“I declare Omoyele Sowore as the consensus presidential candidate of the African Action Congress,” Babayemi said.

“This decision reflects the confidence of the party in his consistency to leadership and long term commitment to the struggle and justice free and truly democratic Nigeria. I sincerely appreciate every party members, stakeholders, and supporters who came out today in solidarity with the vision and values of our great party.

“Your steadfastness and unwavering belief continues to keep Omoyele Sowore as the consensus candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC).”

Reacting to the nomination, Sowore described the AAC as the only genuine opposition platform offering Nigerians a different political direction.

According to him, the party has survived various challenges without relying on political godfathers or corrupt influences.

“While some claim that there was no alternative to dictatorship, we declared revolutionnow in 2019,” Sowore said.

The publisher of Sahara Reporters also dismissed talks of joining forces with established political parties, insisting that the AAC itself represents the coalition Nigerians need.

“And we are here, not only to take the cause of victory, we are here to bring revolutionary change,” he said.

“One of the biggest questions asked of us is, are we not forming a coalition? And we told them, we are the coalition. This is the coalition. You are the coalition. And we are the coalition.”

Sowore further stated that the AAC differs from other political parties because of the values on which it was built.

“It is true. We don’t have a structure of criminality. We don’t have a structure of incompetence. We don’t have a structure of kidnapping. We don’t have a structure of insecurity,” he said.

“We are made up of hard working, young people, old people and Nigerians all over the world. This is a party that started a beautiful revolution.”

He also criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress, questioning why Nigerians would continue to support the party amid the country’s current challenges.

“Except Nigerians are mad. Who is going to join the party of kidnappers? Who is going to join the party of criminals? Who is going to join the party of the most incompetent people on the continent of Africa?” he asked.

Sowore also called on international financial institutions, including the International Monetary Fund, to stop granting loans to Nigerian politicians, warning that his administration would refuse to repay such debts if elected into office.
