Two pilots were killed and more than 40 people injured after an Air Canada plane struck a fire truck on a runway at New York’s LaGuardia Airport many had been discharged by Monday afternoon, according to Kathryn Garcia, head of the city’s Port Authority. The two firefighters involved were expected to recover.

Transport Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed that LaGuardia is “a very well-staffed airport,” addressing rumours that only one controller was on duty. Air traffic controller shortages remain a national issue, prompting increased government recruitment efforts.

The crash led to hundreds of cancelled flights, with some passengers seen resting in terminals on Monday. LaGuardia, located in Queens, is New York’s third-busiest airport, handling 33.5 million passengers in 2024. The airport completed an $8 billion redevelopment in 2024, updating terminals and roadways.
Recent deadly air accidents in the US include a collision between a passenger jet and an army helicopter near Washington in January 2025 that claimed 67 lives.
