Two people sustained injuries early Sunday following a collision between two trucks at the Arepo Bridge area along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The crash, which occurred around 4:00 am, involved an empty American Cola truck and a Seaco truck, causing significant traffic congestion along the busy highway as officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps worked to remove the damaged vehicles.
Eyewitnesses said one of the drivers was rushed to a hospital with serious injuries, while the other sustained minor injuries. Mrs. Ibukun Victoria, who witnessed the incident, told PUNCH Online that one of the drivers suffered a fractured leg.
Another driver attributed the accident to slippery waste allegedly left on the highway. Upon visiting the scene, our correspondent observed debris along the expressway between Arepo and Magboro.
The driver of the American Cola truck, Yakubu Musa, who sustained minor injuries, told PUNCH Online that his truck swayed due to the slippery debris, causing him to lose control despite his efforts to stabilize the vehicle.
“I was coming from Ikeja and heading to Sagamu to load the truck. The truck started swaying around the Arepo area, but I tried all I could before I totally lost control of it around the Punch bridge and it hit the median barrier on the highway,” Musa said.
He added, “The waste on the road is very slippery and every vehicle that passes through is affected. Some had their windscreens and trafficators broken in the process. It was when I got off the truck that I noticed the slippery substance on the road which looked like waste from a factory.
“I thank God I only sustained small injuries on my arm and leg, but the other driver has been rushed to the hospital by his company because his leg was fractured. My motorboy is also safe.”

Another driver, John Emmanuel, who helped with the rescue, criticized the irresponsible disposal of materials that could cause accidents. “The person responsible for the waste on the road should be arrested,” he said.
A police officer at the scene declined to comment, stating he was not authorised to speak to the press. Later, officials of the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency arrived to manage traffic and ease the gridlock along the expressway.
