Comrade Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), is set to be flown abroad for medical treatment to address the injuries he sustained during a scuffle in Imo state.
Ajaero was in Owerri to mobilize Imo workers for a protest rally over an alleged violation and abuse of workers’ rights by the state government. However, the peaceful protest turned violent, with allegations of thugs attacking the protesters and labor leaders.
In a widely circulated video, Ajaero shared his ordeal after being reportedly abducted. The video showed him in the back seat of a moving vehicle, lamenting the maltreatment he received.
Human rights activist Femi Falana has called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to ensure that officers who allegedly brutalized Ajaero are arrested and prosecuted. Falana raised questions about the police’s response to the incident and called for a thorough investigation into the attack.
The incident has raised concerns and generated public outrage, with many calling for justice and accountability in the handling of the case.
