The Federal Government of Nigeria is poised to receive an additional N118.2 billion ($150 million) of looted funds connected to the late General Sani Abacha, who served as Nigeria’s military leader from 1993 to 1998. The recovered funds, which were stashed abroad, are set to be returned to Nigeria.
The announcement was made by the France Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Ms. Catherine Colonna, during a meeting with Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. She informed President Tinubu about the planned repatriation of the seized funds, which will be returned to Nigeria in the form of a grant.
Furthermore, discussions will soon be initiated with the Nigerian government to determine how the repatriated funds will be invested in development projects that benefit the population, aligning with the priorities of the Nigerian government.
It is worth noting that Nigeria has successfully recovered significant sums of money linked to the Abacha regime from various countries over the years. These recovered funds have been utilized for various developmental purposes.
France has played a role in this restitution, and Ms. Catherine Colonna highlighted the strong economic ties between France and Nigeria, with over €10 billion invested by France in Nigeria in the past decade, involving more than 100 French companies and the creation of over 10,000 jobs in Nigeria.
The return of these funds signifies ongoing efforts to recover looted assets and put them to productive use for the benefit of the Nigerian people.
