Nollywood actress and producer Ini Edo has addressed criticisms surrounding her latest film, A Very Dirty Christmas, insisting that the title is metaphorical and not intended to mock or undermine the Christian celebration of Christmas.

The movie has sparked discussions across religious and creative communities, with the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) raising concerns that it may trivialise the festive season. However, several stakeholders in the film industry argue that the backlash is based on a misunderstanding of the movie’s creative intent.

In a statement issued by the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) and signed by outgoing president Emeka Rollas, the guild clarified that the film’s title is a narrative device and does not disrespect Christianity.

Speaking at a private media screening at Filmhouse Cinema, Landmark, Ini Edo explained that the title was inspired by the events that unfold during the Christmas season in the story.

“The whole idea was that it is Christmas and they are coming home to celebrate. The events that unfold during that period are what informed the title. It’s metaphorical and meant to spark curiosity,” she said.

Edo added that commercial factors also played a role in choosing the title, as it was intended to attract audience attention without revealing too much about the plot. She noted that no objections were raised prior to the film’s release, but adjustments could have been made if concerns had been expressed earlier.

The actress also revealed that the word “Dirty” was originally meant to be spelled “Detty,” but that option was already trademarked. While she considered changing the title, she explained that it would be challenging given that the film is already screening in over 70 cinemas nationwide.

“I don’t want anyone to feel hurt by something that was meant to entertain. I respect Christianity deeply and would never intentionally disrespect it,” she said.
